Tesla has launched the Model Y Performance in China, adding a high-performance variant to its best-selling SUV lineup as sales of the key model face weakening demand in the country's fiercely competitive new-energy vehicle market.
The Model Y Performance starts at 369,000 yuan (approx. $51,389) in China. The trim delivers a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.5 seconds and offers a CLTC-certified driving range of 659 km on a single charge.
The launch comes at a sensitive time for Tesla in China. The Model Y, once one of the country's top-selling electric vehicles, has seen its sales soften as domestic rivals including BYD, XPENG, Li Auto and NIO continue to press ahead with competitively priced and well-equipped alternatives.
By introducing the Performance variant, Tesla appears to be aiming to differentiate the Model Y further in a market where feature parity among competitors has become the norm. The Performance trim will slot above the standard Model Y variants already available in China, targeting buyers seeking sportier driving dynamics without sacrificing the practicality the Model Y is known for.
The Chinese market remains critical for Tesla, representing one of its largest sales territories outside the United States. Maintaining relevance in China's fast-evolving EV landscape requires continuous product adjustments, and the arrival of the Model Y Performance signals Tesla's effort to keep pace with local manufacturers who are rapidly iterating on performance and technology offerings.
Tesla did not immediately disclose availability timelines or delivery expectations for the new trim in China.
