SAIC Volkswagen has launched the ID.ERA 5S, a plug-in hybrid sedan targeting China's competitive sub-$17,000 family-car segment. The model made its market launch at the 2026 Chengdu International Auto Show in August, priced from approx. $12,486 (China market 89,900 RMB) to approx. $16,653 (119,900 RMB) across five trims.

The ID.ERA 5S is positioned as Volkswagen's first sedan globally equipped with City NOA (navigation on autopilot) in the smart-driving sphere. The top two trims — Pro Pilot and Max — come standard with the "Xingyun Zhixing" intelligent driving system, co-developed with partner Coremotion, offering both urban and highway NOA functionality alongside 26 active safety features.

Range, Efficiency and Powertrain

According to verification data from CATARC (China Automotive Technology and Research Center), the ID.ERA 5S achieves a real-world combined range of 2033.8 km, with a pure-electric range of 207.5 km. Combined fuel consumption is rated at just 1.25 litres per 100 km. The plug-in hybrid powertrain uses a dedicated engine developed by SAIC Volkswagen specifically for this model.

The vehicle underwent over 100,000 km of durability testing — roughly three times China's national standard — and passed extreme winter and summer environment validation cycles before market launch.

Safety and Build Quality

The body structure uses 86 percent high-strength steel, including 30 percent hot-formed steel. Pro and Max trims are equipped with seven airbags and dual pre-tension seatbelts. The high-voltage system can cut power within 2 milliseconds in a collision event.

Battery protection includes a six-dimensional safety system with a bottom impact resistance rating of 2000 joules. SAIC Volkswagen is also offering a lifetime warranty on the complete vehicle for the first owner — an unusual commitment in this price bracket.

Smart Driving and Parking Aids

Beyond City and Highway NOA, the ID.ERA 5S includes APA automated parking assist, AVP memory parking assist, narrow-road passage assist, trace-back reversing, a 540-degree panoramic camera system, and autonomous emergency braking capable of detecting hazards at speeds up to 140 km/h.

Competitor Landscape

The sub-$17,000 PHEV sedan space in China is densely populated. Key rivals include BYD's Qin MAX DM-i (starting at approx. $13,874 / 99,900 RMB) with a stated 2370 km combined range and 320 km CLTC pure-electric续航 on its top trim, and BYD's Seal 06 series (approx. $13,874–$21,653 / 99,900–155,900 RMB) featuring the DM5.0 hybrid system and Blade Battery.

FAW-Volkswagen's Sagitar L HEV — a non-plug-in hybrid — starts at approx. $11,083 (79,800 RMB) but cannot access China's green-plate policy or offer纯电 commuter capability, placing it at a structural disadvantage on running costs versus true PHEVs.

Volkswagen's ID.ERA 5S differentiates itself by making City NOA standard on its Pro Pilot and Max trims, whereas rival BYD models reportedly reserve advanced ADAS features for higher trims or optional packages.

Availability

The ID.ERA 5S is now available at SAIC Volkswagen dealerships across China. Five trim levels are offered: Pure, Neo, Pro, Pro Pilot, and Max.
