BYD tops August NEV sales with 440,000 units; Chery becomes first Chinese brand to hit 7M cumulative exports

BYD led China's August NEV market with 440,293 units sold, while Chery became the first Chinese automaker to accumulate over 7 million exports. Xpeng, Li Auto, and Aion also posted strong monthly figures.

BYD continued its dominance of the Chinese new-energy vehicle market in August, delivering 440,293 units — a 17.84% year-on-year increase and 5.03% month-over-month growth. The company's cumulative sales through eight months reached 2,668,015 units, with over-class="">1.78 million NEVs sold cumulatively since the brand began tracking that segment separately.

BYD's NEV output broke down into 256,230 pure-electric units and 177,154 plug-in hybrids. Overseas sales exceeded 180,000 units in August alone, setting a new record for the brand. Sub-brands also reported varied results: Fangchengbao surged 155.57% to 41,568 units, Denza rose 33.42% to 16,001, while Yangwang posted 442 units, up 9.14%.

SAIC Motor followed with 357,007 units, a modest 1.75% decline year-on-year but 5.43% higher than July. Its NEV segment stood out, jumping 47.06% to 190,800 units. Exports through overseas bases hit 139,500 units, up 55.74%, reflecting continued push into international markets.

BYD August sales data

Chery Group delivered 280,128 vehicles, up 15.4% annually and marking a milestone: the group became the first Chinese automaker to surpass 7 million cumulative vehicle exports, reaching 7.18 million units in total. New-energy sales within Chery exceeded 120,000 units, growing nearly 70% year-on-year and extending a five-month streak above 100,000 NEV units per month. Export volumes reached 196,984 units, up 52.1%.

Geely Automobile Holdings reported 270,194 units, up 8%, with Galaxy sub-brand contributing 119,115 units. Zeekr more than doubled its sales to 36,981 units, up 109.8%. Lynk & Co dipped to 17,027 units, down 37.44%.

Among newer entrants, XPENG delivered 39,107 units (+3.7%), Li Auto posted 37,679 (+32.1%), and NIO reached 35,836 (+14.5%). Xiaomi Auto crossed the 30,000-unit mark for the first time in August. Leapmotor surged 80.7% to 103,129 units, placing it among the top four global NEV passenger brands and top three in China by recent registration data.

Seres, however, saw a sharp decline — total deliveries fell 39.6% to 27,684 units, with its NEV segment down 43.96% to 24,244 units. GAC Aion BU recorded 36,383 units, up 34.5%, while Deepal came in at 28,659.
