Chengdu Auto Show: 'Box-Style' SUVs Dominate as Joint Ventures Race to Localize
At the 29th Chengdu Auto Show, boxy SUVs fill every booth as合资 brands adopt Chinese smart tech and Huawei's ecosystem expands beyond its 'five domains' into a broader 'two realms' platform strategy.

The 29th Chengdu International Auto Show opened August 21 at the Western China International Expo City, spanning 220,000 square meters with roughly 1,600 vehicles from 120 domestic and international brands. But one day of walking the floor revealed a noticeable drop in visitor enthusiasm — no booth held a constant crowd unless a celebrity spokesperson was present.
Unlike previous shows driven by debut reveals, this year's lineup leaned heavily toward already-launched or pre-sale models with a stronger sales orientation. Many exhibitors treated Chengdu as a final push before the second half of the year rather than a stage for world premieres.
Even so, four clear industry signals emerged from the floor, acting as a preview for the months ahead.
Boxy SUVs Everywhere, Interior Space Wars Begin
This year's Chengdu Show might be remembered as the "box-style" SUV edition. From the outdoor off-road experience area — where Land Rover, a pioneer of the boxy越野 genre, claimed early visibility — to the BYD pavilion replicating rugged terrain, the方正 aesthetic was impossible to miss.
Inside the hall, nearly every brand's flagship spot featured a hard-edged SUV. The Stelato G9, Huawei's first boxy model under the HarmonyOS智行 umbrella, took pride of place at both the鸿蒙智行 and BAIC booths. Fangchengbao's newly unveiled Titanium 9 — just listed in MIIT certification files the day before — occupied center stage on the BYD sub-brand's floor. Geely's Galaxy 700 stood out with its sharp front fascia and aggressive lines, clearly aimed at outdoor buyers.
Established players didn't lag. Great Wall Motor densely displayed its H10 and Tank series boxy offerings, while its pickup brand, the Great Wall Poer, also adopted sharper, moreangular designs. Chery, having found success with Jetour's boxy offerings, introduced the Jetour Zongheng G7 00 to signal its push into premium方盒子 territory. The new Chery-Jaguar Land Rover joint brand, Spaceline, also revealed its first新能源方盒子 model — the Spaceline 8, blending Land Rover's越野 DNA with Chery's electric architecture.
On the exterior-front保持一致方正趋势下, interior space became the real battleground. Xiaomi showcased its N90 and N70 range-extender prototypes with reconfigurable seating — front seats swivel to face rear passengers, effectively redefining cabin layout. Stelato G9 displayed a factory-mounted rooftop tent, adding a second living layer above the roofline. The logic was simple: when外形can't differentiate anymore, space and modularity must.
The message for H2 2026: SUV remains the most congested segment, with方盒子 designs and large six-seat/five-seat family SUVs colliding in increasingly fierce competition.
JV Brands 2.0: Chinese Tech Takes the Driver's Seat
Joint venture brands, long criticized for sluggish electrification, are now restructuring product development from the ground up — and Chinese capabilities lead the way.
The old playbook — overseas designs with wheelbase extensions and spec tweaks for Chinese factories — is being replaced. New models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and the Chery-JLR Spaceline share a common DNA: longer wheelbases, larger batteries, urban driver-assist systems,大model-powered cockpits, refrigerators, entertainment screens and zero-gravity seats.
The BMW iX3 long-wheelbase, built in China, exemplifies the shift. While retaining sixth-generation eDrive and 800V architecture, its intelligent features are deeply localized: ADAS co-developed with Momenta covering city and highway scenarios, Alibaba大model cockpit integration, Amap navigation and Huawei HiCar connectivity. Wheelbase stretches to 3,005 mm, nearly 40 high-value features are standard across the range, and pricing starts at approx. $37,486 (China market 269,900 RMB) — positioning it against not just Mercedes and Audi, but Zeekr, NIO and other Chinese brands in the same bracket.
Mercedes-Benz's locally produced long-wheelbase GLE extends the wheelbase to 3,115 mm and integrates Chinese AI cockpit and Momenta assistance systems. Volkswagen's ID.ERA family abandons a单一纯电路线 entirely, offering纯电, PHEV and EREV variants: the ID.ERA 5S enters at a promotional starting price of approx. $16,069 (China market 115,900 RMB) with city/highway NOP support on higher trims; the ID.ERA 5X stays纯电; the ID.ERA 8X adopts range-extended power.
The Spaceline 8 pushes cooperation even further — Chery provides platform, EREV system, manufacturing and supply chain; Huawei supplies 乾崑ADS 5 with deep all-terrain tuning; CATL delivers batteries; and the Chinese team owns整车定义. The result is a UK-branded新能源全地形SUV built in China and aimed at global markets.
Five Domains, Two Realms: Huawei's Footprint Expands
HarmonyOS智行's "five domains" lineup — AITO, Luxeed, Stelato, Maextro and Shangjie — formed a complete formation at the show. But Huawei's reach extends far beyond那些带"界" badges.
The new "two realms" (启境, 奕境) architecture pairs with the five domains to cover a broader supplier model. Unlike simple parts procurement,华为乾崑 involvement in"境"partnerships spans product definition, R&D testing, quality validation and marketing services, delivering ADAS, smart cockpit, vehicle control and云capabilities. Brand assets,整车 operations and sales channels remain with the automaker.
2The deeper "界"relationship adds another layer: Huawei participates in user research,配置取舍,研发验证 and体验验收, and folds the model into its brand传播, terminal sales, order management, delivery and后服务体系.
The Mengshi X700 launch demonstrated Huawei tech penetrating even deeper into vehicle systems. The X700 features 乾崑ADS 5, HarmonySpace 6 cockpit, and Huawei's vehicle control,云computing,车载光 and鲸鳍通信 solutions — making it distinct from传统hardcore越野 vehicles.
At more accessible price points, Deepal's G318 乾崑版 packs ADS 5 Pro and HarmonySpace 5 into a approx. $20,000-class boxy SUV. Voyah and Arcfox Alpha T7 models also carry 乾崑标识, confirming Huawei's role as an increasingly common智能 technology foundation across the industry.
Chinese Brands Consolidate the 500,000+ RMB Segment
The Chinese premium push has evolved from孤品 flagship moments to完整 product arrays covering executive sedans, flagship SUVs, luxury MPVs, hard越野 models and sports cars.
Maextro leads the charge. The S800 "典藏大观" edition targets Chinese行政 with科技高定 aesthetics. The V680 MPV starts at approx. $9,000 (China market 648,000 RMB), entering the高端家庭与商务MPV space. The V800, priced between approx. $10,650 and approx. $14,110 (China market 766,000–1,016,000 RMB), arrives with 乾崑ADS 5,全主动悬架, rear-wheel steering and a nearly 5.5-meter length — directly challenging the Lexus LM.
Flagship SUVs now include AITO M9, Zeekr 9X, NIO ES9 and Li Auto L9, each carving distinct positioning around智能 safety, performance chassis,纯电 service and家庭空间.硬派越野 sees Yangwang U8 and U8L alongside Mengshi 917 leveraging四电机 and智能底盘.高端MPV gets Zeekr 009 Guanghui alongside the Maextro dual-model strategy.
Chinese luxury is no longer chasing"affordable equivalents"of overseas marques. It is claiming pricing power,豪华 definition authority and规则-setting ability in segments once reserved for legacy brands.
What the Show Really Signaled
Lower attendance doesn't mean stagnation. The Chengdu Show revealed a market moving from首发-driven流量 to product-efficiency and system-capability competition.方盒子 saturation, JV localization,华为 tech diffusion and Chinese brand premium consolidation point to one conclusion: technology boundaries are blurring and brand moats are being rebuilt. The next battle won't go to whoever makes the loudest launch — it will go to whoever converts technology, supply chain and user needs into sales fastest.
