China's new-energy vehicle (NEV) market continued its rapid expansion in August, with sales rising 17.8% year-on-year and the NEV penetration rate reaching a record 60.6% of total auto sales, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales accounted for the bulk of the growth, surging 27.8% year-on-year in August. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales, however, edged down 0.9% from the same period last year, according to CAAM figures.

The data underscores that China's auto market has shifted decisively toward electrification. More than six out of every ten cars sold in China in August were new-energy models, marking the first time the penetration rate has crossed the 60% threshold.

BEV momentum continues

BEVs remained the dominant segment within the NEV category. The 27.8% year-on-year gain reflects sustained consumer demand for pure-electric vehicles across multiple price points, from affordable city cars to premium models.

PHEV sales declined slightly, falling 0.9% compared to August last year. The modest dip may reflect intense competition within the plug-in hybrid segment and pricing pressure from BEV alternatives.

Chinese automakers including BYD, Li Auto, XPENG, NIO, and Zeekr have been racing to expand their NEV lineups and tighten costs in one of the world's most competitive auto markets. The record penetration rate signals that the transition away from internal combustion engines is accelerating faster than many analysts predicted.

Global auto makers selling in China, including Volkswagen, Toyota, and General Motors, continue to lag in the NEV transition, giving domestic brands a widening advantage in the world's largest auto market.
