Leapmotor A05 Launches in China as Company Targets 530,000 More Units This Year

Leapmotor unveiled the A05 starting at approx. $8,875, with July deliveries hitting 101,300 units — the first Chinese NEV startup to break 100,000/month. CEO Zhu Jiangming set a goal of 530,000 additional sales over five months, with overseas traffic aiming for 60% of eventual 1 million annual volume.

Leapmotor has launched its A05 sedan in China, joining its successful A10 compact SUV in the brand's push into the affordable EV segment. The launch comes shortly after Leapmotor became the first Chinese new-EV startup to deliver over 100,000 vehicles in a single month.

A05 Pricing and Specifications

The A05 is available in five variants, priced from 40,500 RMB (approx. $5,625) to 57,500 RMB (approx. $7,986), making it one of the most aggressively priced electric sedans in China:

  • 405 Comfort: 40,500 RMB (approx. $5,625)
  • 405 Luxury: 43,500 RMB (approx. $6,042)
  • 510 Luxury: 48,900 RMB (approx. $6,792)
  • 510 LiDAR: 55,500 RMB (approx. $7,708)
  • 510S: 59,900 RMB (approx. $8,319)

The A05 is built on the same platform as the A10 and shares its key technological differentiators: a range of up to 510 km, an 8295 smart-cockpit chip, LiDAR-equipped advanced driver-assistance features, and city NOA (navigation on autopilot) capability — all uncommon at this price point.

July Deliveries and Yearly Target

Leapmotor delivered 101,300 vehicles in July, marking the first time a Chinese NEV startup has topped 100,000 monthly deliveries. For the full year, the company has set a target of one million vehicles. With approximately 480,000 units sold so far in 2025, CEO Zhu Jiangming stated the company aims to sell roughly 530,000 more units over the remaining five months.

Zhu characterized the company's growth trajectory as steady and linear rather than volatile, a pattern he said has held over the past three years. "We don't do sudden leaps," he said. "Step by step, we keep climbing."

Overseas Expansion: Goal of 60% of Sales

Leapmotor's international ambitions are central to its long-term strategy. In 2024, the company sold 590,000 vehicles globally, with approximately 67,000 going overseas — roughly 10% of total volume. July's figures showed overseas shipments of nearly 20,000 units, or about 20% of the month's deliveries.

Zhu laid out a clear progression for the overseas ratio: first achieving a 40/60 domestic-to-overseas split, then 50/50, and ultimately targeting 60% of total sales coming from overseas if the company ever reaches 10 million annual units. "If we want to hit 10 million, at least 6 million must come from outside China," Zhu said. "No Chinese automaker has ever sold 5 million domestically in a single year, so the only path to 10 million is global."

Spain Manufacturing Partnership

Leapmotor is advancing its partnership with Stellantis to build vehicles in Spain. Zhu confirmed the company plans to begin CKD (completely knocked-down) assembly in Spain by the fourth quarter, with body construction and major components manufactured locally while core powertrain parts continue to be imported from China.

A10 Success and A05 Positioning

The A10, Leapmotor's first A-segment SUV, has emerged as a market hit, with monthly sales approaching 30,000 units. According to research firm JATO Dynamics, the A10 leads its segment in sales, quality, and customer satisfaction. More than half of A10 buyers opted for the LiDAR-equipped trim, and 70% chose a version with 500 km or more of range — both notably high for the segment.

M Xu Jun, senior vice president and COO, described the A05 and A10 as "siblings on the same platform fighting different battles." The A05, he said, targets younger, style-conscious buyers seeking a car that functions as both transport and companion.

Cao Li, another senior executive, emphasized that Leapmotor's vertical integration strategy — spanning the three-electric system, software, and increasingly body and chassis components — allows the company to pack premium features into affordable vehicles. "We take the profit we save through self-development and give it back to customers," he said.
