Zhongtong H12 EREV bus debuts on Hong Kong–Macau cross-border shuttle route
The Zhongtong H12 range-extender bus has been deployed on the HK–Macau Express, marking the first use of new-energy coaches on the cross-border route through the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge.
New energy bus enters cross-border service
The Hong Kong–Macau Express, a cross-border coach route approved by the governments of Hong Kong and Macau and running through the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, has begun operating with the Zhongtong H12 range-extender electric bus — the first time a new-energy vehicle has been deployed on the service.
The line features stops in both Hong Kong and Macau city centers, offering point-to-point direct transit for passengers traveling between the two Special Administrative Regions. The route runs 62 trips daily and carries approximately 40,000 to 50,000 passengers per month.
Vehicle specifications
The Zhongtong H12 features a 49+1 seating layout with a maximum passenger capacity of 49, designed to meet the daily operational demands of the express service. As a range-extender electric vehicle (EREV), it combines an onboard generator with an electric drivetrain, allowing it to operate on pure electric power for shorter segments while extending range for the longer cross-border journey.
According to the manufacturer, the bus is equipped with a comprehensive intelligent safety monitoring system and active safety warning equipment, addressing the route's long operating distances, complex driving scenarios and high safety requirements.
Broader context
The deployment comes amid growing electrification of commercial coach fleets across China. BYD recently reported selling 2,082 new-energy buses in the first half of 2025, up 45 percent year on year, capturing the export sales champion title for the period. Zhongtong's entry into the Hong Kong–Macau corridor signals further momentum for new-energy coaches in cross-border and high-utilization commercial applications.
