Chery Auto August Sales Jump 14%, Exports Drive Over 70% of Volume

Chery Auto reported total sales of 262,990 vehicles in August, a 14% increase compared with the same month last year, the company said.
Of those figures, 187,154 units were exported, representing 71.2% of the brand's overall sales volume. The data underscores Chery's growing reliance on overseas markets, where it has established a strong foothold in regions including Latin America, the Middle East, Russia and Southeast Asia.
Chery has been one of China's most aggressive exporters among domestic automakers, consistently ranking near the top in vehicle export volume. Its portfolio spans sub-brands such as Arrizo, Tiggo, Omoda and Jaecoo, with the latter two aimed squarely at international buyers.
Overseas Expansion Remains Central Strategy
The automaker's export share has climbed steadily in recent months. At the start of 2024, overseas sales accounted for roughly 45% of Chery's total volume, but that ratio has widened significantly as domestic competition intensifies and the Chinese home market faces mounting price pressure.
Chery operates manufacturing bases in several key export markets, including Brazil, Iran and Thailand, which help it navigate local tariffs and trade barriers while reducing logistics costs. The company has also invested in CKD (completely knocked-down) assembly plants across multiple emerging markets.
Domestic Market Faces Continued Pressure
While exports have surged, Chery's domestic sales remain under pressure from the ongoing price war among Chinese automakers. The company has introduced multiple affordable EV and plug-in hybrid models in recent months to defend its home-market position, but the competitive landscape continues to favor companies with stronger battery and software ecosystems.
